Not Ready to Lead But….

From Joseph Bottum at First Thoughts:
I am convinced that, even after the special election in Massachusetts, the Democrats have no idea how big the tidal wave will be in November. The Republicans need ten seats to take the Senate, and thirteen are in play. Maybe more. A tsunami is about to hit the incumbents.
Of course, the Republican-controlled Senate will promptly hand reelection to Obama in 2012, as he’ll have them to run against.
I can’t really find anything to disagree with here. Democrats have played the last year so poorly that it’s really hard to believe when I recall how depressed conservatives were the day after the 2008 elections. To be sure the Right hasn’t done anything to deserve this newfound support, but there it is. The only message I seem to be taking from this is that America is still a conservative nation at heart meaning we are skeptical and deliberate about change. Democrats have done an incredibly poor job of selling their agenda and again and again it seems that ‘misplaced priorities’ is the phrase that best describes their time in power.
Bottum is also correct that Obama will easily win reelection unless Republicans use their success in November much more wisely. They seem to have learned nothing from defeat and the Tea Party’s strength within Republican ranks is not a positive sign of things to come. So the question then becomes, are we better off replacing an incredibly incompetent Democratic majority with an incredibly incompetent Republican majority? The only reason I am inclined to say yes is because I know with a GOP in power nothing will get done…and for now that may be the safest thing for the country.
