Grandmother’s War Stories

Beautiful slideshow up at The NY Times today. Please check it out.

After the collapse of the Italian front at Caporetto in October 1917, the enemy occupied the town. Soldiers camped in the barn next to my grandmother’s house and stole sheets from her family to rip into long strips to wrap around their legs. They used these puttees to keep warm.
To our veterans… THANK YOU.
