The Death of Print

Megan McArdle says that the newspaper business is dying…for real.  It’s certainly hurting. One suggestion from me continues to be stop giving it away for free.

I like reading the paper, though we don’t subscribe to one and even when we do I rarely have time to do more than a quick fly-by. What I like the most though is getting the news that I never would have sought out on my own. I haven’t found that the internet replaces that randomness just yet.

Her prediction that the locals will die and give way to just a few national papers is uber-depressing. How often do you see an article about Crestwood, KY or Lynchburg, VA in the Wall Street Journal?

Technology is mostly a good thing, but in this case it seems to be doing harm. Either that or someone needs to develop a pricing model that works.

One Response to The Death of Print

Its the pricing model. And, though I fear where it might lead, we who read most of our news on-line may well have to start paying for it. Otherwise, printed dailies will becmoe aluxury for the super rich . . .. ,.
