Summer Reading
June 2, 2009 4 Comments
The Big Stick is going on the road next week. Blogging will be covered by some post-dated entries, a few friends who have graciously offered to contribute and some sporadic travel blogging as my family makes its way through the American Southwest.
While I am excited about the trip we are about to take I’m also excited to be taking a mental break from political blogging to read some fiction. My wife says I need to spend less time on Google Reader and more time turning real pages, so I have decided to undertake a tall order. I’ve always been a distant fan of Sherlock Holmes, mostly through movie adaptations. Now I will find out if the written stories are just as enjoyable. In my backpack will be this beauty:

Wish me luck folks.

Have you seen the trailer for the new “Sherlock Holmes,” or should I say, “Schlock Holmes” movie starring Robert Downey Jr.?
I love popcorn munching movies and explosions but… I …. I don’t even know what to say after seeing the trailer. Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone must be rolling their his graves.
BTW, if you’re looking for some good and unusual reading this summer, I’d recommend Cyrano de Bergerac if you want to stick with a classic. It’s surprisingly fun to read!

I’ve seen the trailer. It’s not what I had hoped for. I like Downey and I know they are trying to bring some of the obscure elements of Holmes to the forefront to make him more exciting, but it appears to just be 007 set in Victorian England.
After Holmes I really want to just bury my head in some complete fluff for a couple of months. I’m seriously considering wiping out the romance section at the local library and letting my brain take a bubble bath.
Excellent choice with your travel destinations, the South West is awesome. If you happen to get a wild hair to head north from Texas, and find yourself in Northern Colorado look me up! I always have interesting things going on to entertain guests. Pyro, guns, rockets, bowling pin skeet, you name it.
BTW, if you want a seriously good book to exercise your brain try the Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.

We will actually be in Colorado for part of the trip (my first time). I insisted we stop by Mesa Verde. I think we’re also going through Durango so we’ll be within 400 miles of Flounder-land. Unfortunately my father-in-law has not built any wiggle room into our schedule so I will be stuck in the van with everyone else.
