Fireproof

I don’t endorse movies very often, even though I watch a fair amount of them, but my wife and I rented Fireproof over the weekend and I think it’s worth mentioning. This movie is certainly never going to win any Academy Awards and the acting is mostly of the community theater variety, but I would recommend it to every married person that reads this. It’s message transcends marriage, but that is the target audience and that is who I am speaking to.
Fireproof tells the story of a couple that has been married for 7 years and have clearly drifted apart and are facing divorce. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, the husband (played by Kirk Cameron) is given a challenge by his father to complete something he calls the ‘Love Dare’ which takes a biblical 40 days. The Dare asks him to complete a series of tasks aimed at changing the way he views his wife. Watching the process and the repeated rejection of his efforts is painful at times but it takes the viewer on an important journey.
The movie was made by a church in Georgia (most of the cast were congregation members and acted for free) and I won’t deny that there is a strong faith component to the story. If that is a turn-off, maybe I can convince some of you skeptics to at least enjoy a true love story. The movie is worth watching and I promise that if you keep an open mind it will make your heart feel good.
