Ron Paul '12! ;)

I really don't want to get toooo attached to anybody at the moment; I'm not the sort to start a "draft " website. I'm just saying that I hope stronger candidates emerge; in fact, I'm almost sure that they will.

Besides which, I'm strongly considering registering as a Libertarian. I really don't like the way the party has sold their nomination for headline-grabbing lately (come on, Bob Barr?), but I've been more persuaded than ever this year that participating in third-party politics is a viable alternative.

That's probably a blog post of its own, though.

Hey John, I have others I would probably prefer in 2012 to Palin. One politician I am keeping my eye on is Mitch Daniels. I hear a lot of good stuff about him thought I'm pretty clueless about his bio.

Good to see you back in "long form," Mike. :)

I feel certain that she wants to hang around. Her election-night comments were decidedly against the idea, but the quote I see from her FOX interview sounds like classic politician-code for "I'm in." To wit:

“This is what I always do. I’m like, O.K., God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I’m like, don’t let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is. Even if it’s cracked up a little bit, maybe I’ll plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don’t let me miss an open door. And if there is an open door in ‘12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I’ll plow through that door.”

She's done nothing to alienate the base, so I think your proposed plan is likely; it's a Right-ist version of John Edwards circa 2004-2006. I suspect she'll be quite successful at it. That said, I can't help breaking out this old saw - I hope she's not my best option in four years.
