This story is a bit old, but no less disappointing weeks later. I think the big losers here are the American people and this seems to confirm my belief that Obama prefers to not actually talk about specifics.
Sen. Barack Obama “backed away from rival John McCain’s challenge for a series of joint appearances, agreeing only to the standard three debates in the fall,” the AP reports.
Wrote campaign manager David Plouffe: “Due to the late date of the two parties’ nominating conventions, and the relatively short period between the end of the conventions and the first proposed debate, it is likely that the four Commission debates will be the sole series of debates in the fall campaign.”

I’m disappointed to. It’s a bad call on his part. I think he’d trounce McCain, and this sends the way wrong message. Obama’s not doing well lately in the strategy department – he needs to get the frak home from vacation.

His campaign actually said they don’t want to give McCain a platform any more than necessary. That tells me they are worried about a debate.
Obama still has a long road ahead of him and I keep recalling how sure of himself Kerry seemed at this point 4 years ago.

Kerrry was already tanking this time last election: he also neverbhad the poll numbers Obama has still. Kerry was always a squeaker: Obama just changes between landslide and minor victory.
As for the debates, it’s clear to me that what he’s doing is trying to monopolize the limelight and squeeze McCain out of it. QUITE effective… Until McCain started to spin popularity as a downer. It’s a ballsy strategy that’s bad for America and bad fir him. It’s clear we agree on that much
