McCain Makes Progress in ‘Battleground States’

While Obama has been on his pre-victory tour through Europe, his opponent has been quietly gaining ground in several key states.

From Political Wire:

Sen. John McCain has inched ahead of Sen. Barack Obama in Colorado; come within inches in Minnesota and narrowed the gap in Michigan and Wisconsin, according to four simultaneous Quinnipiac polls of likely voters in these battleground states.

  • In Colorado, McCain leads 46% to 44%.
  • In Michigan, Obama leads 46% to 42%.
  • In Minnesota, Obama leads 46% to 44%.
  • In Wisconsin, Obama leads 50% to 39%.

Most interesting finding: “Voters in each state say energy policy is more important than the war in Iraq. And by margins of 22 to 31 percentage points, voters in each state support offshore oil drilling, and by seven to 12-point margins, drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.”

Wow. Voters are buying the offshore drilling issue, despite McCain’s flip-flop on the issue (he only started to support it when it became convenient!), and the scientific proof that drilling in either locale won’t even be a salve. Sad. If McCain hopes to win by exploiting the idiocy of the American voter, doesn’t that say something pretty sad about him?

    Resisting…urge….to…substitute…Obama’s name….in that sentence…

Offshore drilling is going to be part of a comprehensive solution, with alternative energy and reduced consumption being the other two componets. There ARE huge reserves offshore and I don’t think it’s irresponsible to go after them. He has never backed down from his promotion of wind, solar, clean coal, nuclear, etc to go along with the drilling.

When McCain said, “Even though it may take some years, the fact that we are exploiting those reserves would have a psychological impact that I think is beneficial.”

He completely lost the argument for me. I’m not willing to risk a reserve and the environment for a psychological impact (along with Ames point of reports of minimal actual affect).

  4. Perhaps the ‘psychological impact’ would be on the Saudis and Iranians who both benifit from their trade leverage on oil. It would also impact the Chinese whose primary motivation is to find ways to steal our sources to feed their own needs.
