Food for Thought

Uncorrelated has this interesting little post:
I decided to search Google news for accounts of rapes, shootings and other violence associated with the massive flooding in the mid-west.
This what I found.
Your search – levees violence rape shooting – did not match any documents.
Not a single story about people shooting at helicopters, looting Wal-marts, raping helpless women and children.
What I am seeing is the neighborhood getting together to fill sandbags, orderly evacuations and most importantly–no whining.
I have my own ideas about what this means, but I suspect that if I wrote them here they would expose my elicit love affair with Middle America and label me a biased soul. Instead I’d like to hear what others think.

It means that there are no large concentrations of negroes in the the mid-west. Isn’t that obvious?
I think it would be more accurate to say that the haves didn’t bail out leaving the havenots to fend for themselves. Instead most everybody worked together for the common good.
What I actually believe is that this demonstrates that middle america is just generally more self-sufficent. I am not saying that to criticize other parts of the country. Rather, average Americans can learn from that.
It also reflects just how vulnerable poor, urban populations are. If this had happened in a large, poor city….oh wait, it did. Those places have got to do a better job of protecting their citizens.
