Boy Scouts of America Turns 98 !

I’d like to wish a belated Happy Birthday to the Boy Scouts of America. To date tens of millions of America’s youths have been a member of the Scouting movement.
One of the most enduring achievements of the early progressive movement in the United States, Scouting embodies many of the ideals that define progressive conservatism. Stewardship of the natural world, social and civic responsibility and a commitment to traditional morality and values.
Happy Birthday!

The Boy Scouts of America are a private organization and as such, are able to practice bigotry, hatred, and discrimination without social or legal consequences. They don’t want you if you’re an agnostic.
Too bad.
You must have had a far different experience than i did, in a troop with kids of several different faiths and from families that really practiced no faith. As for agnostics, perhaps today’s teens are more in-tune with that kind of stuff than i was, but i know very few kids that have those things sorted out at that age.
As for ‘bigotry, hatred and discrimination…” again, you must have had a far different experience than I did.
Able to practice bigotry and hatred, but by Congressional Charter and organizational creed, they don’t. Generally.
We never ask a 7-year-old Cub Scout his faith or sexual orientation. Parents may have some issues, but that is not a block to kids joining, or shouldn’t be.
As an agnostic Scout, the toughest time I had was when I was attached to an LDS unit. That had nothing to do with agnosticism. I’m a practicing Christian now. Scouting is a better moral preparation for life in America than any religion, I think. Your mileage may differ, but I’ll bet not by much.
